lyrics

I heard what you said to Rosie
on the way to Gili Island
As I sat there sweating zipped inside my case
You said you shouldn't have brought me along
As if somehow I'd done you wrong,
then complained about my figure and my weight
After all the pubs and clubs we played,
the beach bonfire serenades,
did you really think that I would let you down?
That's when I decided
once we landed on that island
that I'd flirt with every musician in town.
You pulled me out that afternoon,
got all of my strings in tune,
then carried me with your hand around my neck.
And I flashed my mahogony,
and ebony, so all could see,
me teaching you a lesson in respect.
A fisherman named Alan
asked if he could play a song,
then ran his fingers up and down my frets.
As he cooed in soothing Japanese,
some tourists threw a few rupees,
and you stood there swaying by his fishing nets.
Then a man behind the curry cart,
stared at all my curvy parts,
you told him he could take me for a spin.
He served you all Nasi Goreng,
then sang a little Kurt Kobain,
while you and Rosie sang along with him.

I've been with you to Nicaragua,
Australia, Sumbawa,
El Salvador, Chile and Mexico
I've been through Yosemite,
Zion, Bryce, and Death Valley,
and everywhere on California's coast.
I've seen you make love, seen you crying,
heard your laughing and your sighing,
I've seen you at your best and at your worst.
That's all there is to it,
our path is paved with music,
the healing force of this whole universe!

Then came Markus, that Norwegian bloke,
who you met on the snorkeling boat,
who played everything from metal to bepop.
With tattoos on his neck and hands,
he played one from his Doom Metal band,
that's when I finally let my G-string pop.
You shoulda seen the look on your face,
you had no extras in your case,
but along came Alan and he told us "Wait right here."
He ran back with a brand new 3,
you strung me up and strummed a G
and we all sang for hours drinking beer
On the walk back, just before sunrise,
I caught a nocturnal local's eye
he ran up and said "Please let me sing for you."
He put out his cig and cleared his throat,
and sung in smoky, creaking notes
the most heartfelt ballad I ever listened to
Rosie asked the man his name,
and from behind his lighter's flame,
he said "All of my friends call me BT"
You asked him what that stood for
and with a Jack-O-Lantern smile
he blew out his smoke and told us "Broken Teeth"

I've been with you to Nicaragua,
Australia, Sumbawa,
El Salvador, Chile and Mexico
I've been through Yosemite,
Zion, Bryce, and Death Valley,
and everywhere on California's coast.
I've seen you make love, seen you crying,
heard your laughing and your sighing,
I've seen you at your best and at your worst.
That's all there is to it,
our path is paved with music,
the healing force of this whole universe!
