Sippin from the moonlit pond
the midnight maddened vagabond
is perched upon the border of a dream
Slippin in it chills the skin
He breathes to let the memories in
Then sends them sailing softly with the stream
I seem to find low places
like the water finds the sea
I seem to find a way
to wind up lost
I wonder and I wander
Like the roots below the trees
Searching for a place to plant my cross
As thunder shook the sheets of rain
He shook his head and thought of ways
to make them think his death was just bad luck
Up the mountain, through the storm
His clothes were soaked, his throat was torn
from screaming skyward begging to be struck
I seem to find low places
like the water finds the sea
I seem to find a way
to wind up lost
I wonder and I wander
Like the roots below the trees
Searching for a place to plant my cross
He came to rest on ashy ground
And when the morning rose he found
the smoke-stained forest glazed in dazzling white
As if the stars had crystallized
Fell earthward from their brightblack sky
and burst like blizzard bombshells through the night
I will find my way back
like the winter finds the spring
I will find a way to take the loss
I can feel myself growin
Like the roots below the trees
Searching for a place to plant my cross
Searching for a place to plant my cross
Searching for a place to plant my cross
