The Way to Watch a Whale
03:59
|
|||
I saw a woman standing with a thousand acre gaze.
She was peering past the pelicans, beyond the breaking waves.
I think she felt me lookin cuz she turned and looked right back,
looked me up and down and asked me, "What you lookin at?"
I said, "That's kinda funny, I was gonna ask the same.
What is it your staring at beyond the breaking waves?"
She looked back to the ocean, wrapped her fingers round the rail,
stood up on her tippy toes and said "I'm watchin whales!"
I said, "Standing on the shore? That's not the way to watch a whale,
you need a motor boat with motors, or a sail ship with sails,
you sweep em with your sonar and then chase them through the sea,
That's the way to watch a whale, I watched it on T.V."
Suddenly she lit up and she shouted, "Look at that!"
I didn't see the whale, but I saw the massive splash.
The woman whipped around and with a whale of a smile said.
"The way to watch a whale is to wait a little while!"
Chorus:
Some say heaven's in the sky
But if the devil's in the details. so is the divine.
This world is heaven in disguise
I could see it, I could see it in that whale watchers eyes.
I wiggled in my wetsuit, wished the whale watcher well,
then wandered to the water to go swimmin with the swell
I stumbled cross a surfer and he said "Cu Cu Cachoo?"
I said "Nada mucho, are you watchin whales too?"
He said "Theres no whales here, we're way to close to shore,
I'm here to ride a gnarly wave on my brand new surfing board"
Then he turned back to the ocean, looked down and he sighed,
"I haven't seen a whale since the day that I went blind."
I asked him how it happened and he said "the fault was mine,
You can never be to careful when you're brewin your own shine."
That's when I knew this guy was crazy, bout as crazy as they get
when suddenly he lit up and he yelled "Here comes a set!"
The wave he caught was massive, even bigger than a whale,
He went swoopin down the glassy face and shootin out the barrel.
I said "How the hell'd you catch a wave you couldn't even see?"
He said "Man, I didn't catch that wave, I let the wave catch me!"
Chorus:
Some say heaven's in the sky,
But if the devil's in the details, so is the divine,
This world is heaven in disguise.
I could see it, He couldn't see it, But I could see it in that blind old surfer's eyes
Some say heaven's in the sky,
But if the devil's in the details, so is the divine,
This world is heaven in disguise.
I can see it, Can you see it?? I can see it in everybody's eyes!

The hammock is swinging, the urracas are singing,
the monkeys are howling, and so is my heart.
I got a girl in my arms, a map in my pocket,
and a plan in my head that I can't wait to start.
Last night was odd, we almost got robbed
by a guy with a ski mask and a big ol' machete.
The dog and the guard chased him through the backyard.
He got away, but his pockets were empty.
Now this old Irish skinhead is talking 'bout justice
with a voice like straight whisky and caned cigarettes.
He pulls out what he calls “me stabbing machete”
and says, “If I catch that bastard, I'll poke him to death!”
Como estamos? Deacachimba, deacachimba my girl.
Adonde vamos? Grenada, Managua, then when will I see you?
When will I see you my girl?
Jimmy Joe's in the kitchen cooking horse tranquilizers.
He falls on his face after five or six lines.
Emma, oh Emma, thank God you're a doctor.
You saved his life, did you know you saved mine?
We helped the bartender carry Jim to his bedroom.
The bartender said, “You know, I like you guys.”
Then he ran to the bar and pulled out some scratch paper
and drew us a map to his own paradise.
He said, “This little island is our little secret.
More lobsters and coconuts than you two could eat.”
He put the map in my pocket and he pointed upstairs,
said, “There's a hammock up there if you guys wanna sleep.”
Como estamos? Deacachimba, deacachimba my girl.
Adonde vamos? Grenada, Managua, then when will I see you?
When will I see you my girl?
The hammock is swinging, the orracas are singing,
the monkeys are howling and so is my heart.
I've got a girl in my arms, a map in my pocket,
and a plan in my head that I can't wait to start.
Beauty's that line right between peace and chaos,
her eyelashes rising as slow as the sun.
She's got a boy in her arms and a smile that tells him
a brand new beginning's already begun.
Como estamos? Deacachimba, deacachimba my girl.
Adonde vamos? Grenada, Managua, then when will I see you?
When will I see you?
Como estamos? Deacachimba, deacachimba my girl.
Adonde vamos? Grenada, Managua, then when will I see you?
When will I see you my girl?

The Hamster Song
I'm in a hamster ball in a hamster wheel
in a hamster cage in an open field,
wonderin how the buffalo feel.
A styrofoam slot car, double yellow lines,
on a one way road going thirty-five,
dying to be alive.
I reached for the stars and made it to space,
and now I'm kinda stuck just floating in place
in empty air, right next to the moon
But you should see, you should see the view from here
It's all crystal blue and golden clear
I can feel it all
We're bottled waterfalls
I've been working so long in this endless maze
In an ant farm you don't count no days
and the sun don't shine, and the rain don't fall
For hours I watch from behind this big glass wall
and pray to myself that I could change it all
but the world's so big and my world's so small
I reached for the stars and made it to space,
and now I'm kinda stuck just floating in place
in empty air, right next to the moon
But you should see, you should see the view from here
It's all crystal blue and golden clear
I can feel it all
We're bottled waterfalls

Hashtag $phincter

I was in this band with a couple friends
we had a fiddle, a bass, and a mandolin
we laid our case out on the strip
and we were playin songs for dollar tips
when a pack of babes went struttin by
glitter streaked across their eyes
and glowsticks hangin from their wrists
star-shaped pasties on their tits
"Hey girls, where you goin? Don't you wanna hear some Ricky Skaggs?"
Soon the neon crowd was round the block
they had candy bracelets and tiny tops
and booty shorts and furry shoes
I said, "look boys, we got nothin to lose"
so we shoved our guitars in the car
rolled our flannels up our arms
and stood in line to wait and see
Skrillex playin at the Key
We slid on through the sweaty crowd
the lights were bright and the bass was loud
Scotty yelled, "Do your ears hurt?
Sounds like Godzilla's givin birth!"
Then from out of the fog pranced a raver chick
pacifier between her lips
from her fanny pack she pulled a pill
I thought, I'm here, I might as well
Soon I'm dancin like a drunk monkey
while the drums and lasers danced with me
A dude gave me a back massage,
but I didn't care, I felt like God,
and that's when I looked up on stage
Skrillex up there pressin play
with a hairdo and a mac book pro,
I thought, I'm gettin me one of those
And I sang
(Dubstep breakdown)
So I called up Scotty and said, "We're set,
forget that fiddle, we're playin dubstep"
we downloaded some software illegally
the synthesizer sounds were free
we got a turntable, mic, and some other toys,
went up in my attic and started makin noise
put it all on top of some hard drum loops
facebook status, "Look what I produced!"
We got 23 likes and someone shared our page
so now all we needed was a name
we called it "$phincter" (with a dollar sign S)
and paid a blog to say we were the best,
that caught the eye of this one guy
who knew a girl, who knew another guy
who knew of a place that we could play a set,
the promoter said we were as underground as it gets.
The night of the show was like a dream,
"$phincter" spread 'cross the marquee,
the neon crowd came like a flood
of crazy clothes and crazier drugs
We wore fohawks and tribal masks,
pressed space bar, twisted knobs, and danced
That was our first taste of fame
They loved the way our laptop sang
And it went..
(Dubstep breakdown)
Well the twitterers tweeted everything
hashtag $phincter on every screen
our tribal masks on instagram
and a thousand likes from every fan
we played at TAO and EDC
they showed our house on MTV
we did a remix of a Skrillex track,
then Skrillex remixed our remix back.
That's right, Skrillex was playin our song.
One day we were up on stage,
twistin knobs and pressin play
when behind us walked the man himself
and us three unleashed the gates of hell
backstage I was like a little kid,
"Skrillex did you see what we just did?
We'll do shows in Japan, and shows in Spain!
We'll call ourselves American House Gang!"
But he just shook his hair-do'd head
and said, "Sorry man, our time is dead,
some genius over at MIT
programmed his robot to do everything.
It builds the synths, it plays the drums,
it writes the songs, it invites everyone,
it has a new guest appearance every day,
they project a hologram up of it on stage..
Biggie smalls, Marilyn Monroe, Atila the Hun, you name it."
So I looked down and I thought real hard
How can we try and raise the bar?
What can we possibly create
that this robot cannot simulate
something that can't be put in code
something from the human soul
then a lightbulb went off, and I said "I know!
Skrillex, can you play banjo?"
(Banjo solo)
I was in this band with a couple friends,
we had a fiddle, a bass, and a mandolin...and a banjo
we laid our case out on the strip
and we were singin songs for dollar tips
when a family went walkin by
and a little girl with big brown eyes
walked on up and threw in some change
so we all danced and we all sang
Hey mister tambourine man,
play a song for me
I'm not sleepy, and there's no place that I'm going to
Hey mister tambourine man,
play a song for me
In this jingle jangle morning, I'll come following you

All That's Left to Know
03:14
|
|||
He wears his heart on his sleeve and his mind on his hat
The only thing he's looking for is what he's looking at
Each microscopic moment he embraces and adores
Trading all that lies behind him for all that lies before
He likes to go for walks by the ocean
It's hard to get lost along the shore
Just follow your tracks and you'll make your way back
To all that lies before
He fled the night and chased the day by flying to the west
and every setting second seemed to bloom into the next
His freedom is an arrow he released from his own bow,
trading everything he's ever known for all that's left to know
He likes to go for walks through the forest
You can't get lost in freshly fallen snow
Just follow your tracks and you'll make your way back
to all that's left to know
Sometimes I find it tempting to just go out on a limb,
but the ground is hard so far below and these branches are so thin.
I weave my past like spider webs and hope it holds the weight,
when I fall into my fate.
He wears his heart on his sleeve and his mind on his hat,
the only thing he's looking for is what he's looking at.

The Weevils in the Bisquick took the minivan downtown.
Scotty tuned up the fiddle and the mandolin, guitar case on the ground.
We played “Devil Went Down to Georgia” and sang “East Bound and Down”
We all strummed and stomped our feet while the people gathered 'round.
We picked until our fingers bled and our voices all were shot
Then we counted all the coins and the dollar bills in the back of the parking lot
Chase had the best fake ID, he brought the cash to the liquor store,
Then we brought the brews out to Santa Cruz, and then we sang some more...we sang
Bad ones make the good ones better
Good ones make the bad ones worse
Found a scrapyard full of treasure
the unwrapped gift below the curse
This fog will burn away by sunset
and I will fall asleep by dawn
Bad ones make the good ones better
so they better come bring it on
Later on that summer, we were trying to make a dime,
So we rolled on out to a festival that was selling art and wine.
We didn't have a permit, but we still played our songs
People watched and people danced and the drunk ones sang along
Sure enough that cop came through to spoil all our fun
He pulled out his citation book and the band started to run
A lesson out there to anyone trying to play the upright bass;
In a race to scram from the police man, you're gonna get last place
I did. But I sang...
Bad ones make the good ones better
Good ones make the bad ones worse
Found a scrapyard full of treasure
the unwrapped gift below the curse
This fog will burn away by sunset
and I will fall asleep by dawn
Bad ones make the good ones better
so they better come bring it on
We played a redneck wedding that Fourth of July
Ernie was doing keg-stands with the daughter of the bride
We were smoking doobies with the biker gang outside
They called themselves the outlaws and they showed us all their rides
We stayed until the fireworks had set the sky on fire,
James held the bride's daughter's hair while she puked on our back tire
I haven't seen those Weevils since I turned twenty-one,
but every time I think of them, I knod my head and strum
and I sing...
Bad ones make the good ones better
Good ones make the bad ones worse
Found a scrapyard full of treasure
the unwrapped gift below the curse
This fog will burn away by sunset
and I will fall asleep by dawn
Bad ones make the good ones better
so they better come bring it on

The Legend of Old Red
03:59
|
|||
Kyle lived out in Alviso where you could smell the swamp,
worked with his buddy Alfred at his old man's auto shop.
One night they were drinking, like they so often do,
when Alfred went in the garage to grab a few more brews.
He saw the rider mower in the corner gathering dust,
patchwork welds across the front and a thick layer of rust.
With a drunken mischief smile, he took a swig of his Keystone,
and he yelled, “Hey man Kyle! How fast does this thing go?”
Kyle said, “You mean Old Red? That's Grandpa's monkey wards,
and that tractor's been sittin there since 2004.
I'll bet you forty dollars that you can't get it to run.”
A couple hours later, Alfred yelled, “I won!”
Old Red, she was sputterin and smokin in the yard,
Alfred standing proudly crossed his greasy arms
and said, “Take that forty dollars, go get us some more gas.
The landspeed record's eighty-five, and I wanna go that fast.”
Old Red, Old Red
Gas 'er up and put 'er into drive
Old Red, Old Red
Landspeed record eighty-five
By Monday they had rebuilt both the engine and the tranny,
one hundred twenty cc's with a brand new three speed granny.
But when they floored it past the radar over on Marsh Avenue,
the sign just read a really disappointing sixty two.
So they took off all the excess parts, put on ATV tires,
and replaced the whole exhaust pipe with one made from carbon fiber
Bought some spark plugs from the auto shop, said “This should make it quicker!”
Of course the real thing that made it go were those NASCAR racing stickers..
The night had finally come when they would try to break that record
so they found an old abandoned road with a radar detector.
With a motorcycle helmet and just the right amount of stupid
Alfred revved the motor and he yelled, “Let's fuckin do this!!”
The engine roared and rattled, Alfred held on for dear life,
a flying streak of rusty red like a comet through the night
Kyle strained his eyes to read the flashing radar sign
He raised his arms in victory when he saw the eighty-nine!
Old Red, Old Red,
Gas 'er up and put her into drive
Old Red, Old Red,
Land speed record eighty-nine

Rock Bottom
04:40
|

When our DD got a DUI
he blew a point two three and nearly walked the line
but he staggered all around it one too many times
and the cop said, “Hands on the car.”
Well he took our keys, and he found my weed,
then he took my friend, and he took me,
I told him, “Next time, sir, we'll be sure to stay at the bar.”
I thought I hit rock bottom,
I said “At least it's only up from here,”
but every time I hit rock bottom,
the bottom keeps droppin down another year.
Now it's New Year's Eve
and I'm a few beers deep,
so bottoms up to the holidays.
I thought I hit rock bottom,
but the bottom just got farther away.
Well I don't got money, but I got time,
I took community service to pay the fine.
Pickin up trash with my partner in crime,
orange vests by the interstate.
And I remember what my momma said when I left,
she said, “Tim, these are the years that you will never forget.”
I told her, “Momma, if I forgot these ones, well that would be great.”
I thought I hit rock bottom,
I said “At least it's only up from here,”
but every time I hit rock bottom,
the bottom keeps droppin down another year.
Now it's New Year's Eve
and I'm a few beers deep,
so bottoms up to the holidays.
I thought I hit rock bottom,
but the bottom just got farther away.

Pull Over
04:32
|
|||
I've been napping for a while now.
We're still northbound on the 5.
Our next turn's in eighty miles now,
following that same white dotted line.
The CD in the changer's finally getting old.
“Is it me or is it my attention span.”
Switch to static mariachi radio,
don't matter if we don't understand.
Between two home on an endless road,
and you're why I'm not alone, I'm not alone
Between two home on an endless road,
and you're why I'm not alone, I'm not alone
Pull over. Pull on over.
We haven't kissed for real
since when we left Bakersfield,
so pull over. Pull on over.
You're stuck behind that wheel,
now pull on over.
The cows are grazing in the pastures,
and I am gazing at you now.
There's no need to get there faster,
hit that signal, turn this thing around.
Pull behind the taqueria
in that seven tractor town,
Park in the shade where nobody can see us,
we got the windows up, let's put these backseats down
Between two home on an endless road,
and you're why I'm not alone, I'm not alone
Between two home on an endless road,
and you're why I'm not alone, I'm not alone
Pull over. Pull on over.
We haven't kissed for real
since when we left Bakersfield,
so pull over. Pull on over.
You're stuck behind that wheel,
now pull on over.

Another Stupid Song
03:54
|
|||
I broke my last twenty, I broke my last ten,
I broke my last five, now I'm broke again,
I had to draw twenty people but I only drew two,
Singin' on the corner cuz the gig fell through
I could paint myself silver, or paint myself gold,
or paint on a smile make balloon animals,
I could bang on a bucket or a didgeridoo
but I'm singin on the corner cuz the gig fell through
Best comes to best, this goes perfectly right,
and I can learn to laugh about the way I felt that night.
Worst comes to worst, this goes horribly wrong,
and becomes another verse in another stupid song.
I went home for Christmas to see everyone,
My Mom said, “Tim, you're lookin like a bum.
Shave off the beard, get a job interview.”
I'm singin on the corner cuz the gig fell through.
I got a Volkswagon bus, I sleep in the back,
but I don't drive much cuz it eats up gas,
I'm stuck in the city like the shit on my shoe.
Singin' on the corner cuz the gig fell through.
Best comes to best, this goes perfectly right,
and I can learn to laugh about the way I felt that night.
Worst comes to worst, this goes horribly wrong,
and becomes another verse in another stupid song.
So I say hey to a man and a son
and the man says, “Man do you know Neil Young?”
So I played “Old Man,” and man, it felt true,
Singin on that corner cuz the gig fell through.
Best comes to best, this goes perfectly right,
and I can learn to laugh about the way I felt that night.
Worst comes to worst, this goes horribly wrong,
and becomes another verse in another stupid song.

I wanted so badly to happen to see you today,
that I left a little early for work and took the long way.
If I happened to see you, I probably wouldn't know what to say,
except I wanted so badly to happen to see you today.
The things you say will stay with me,
I put them up in frames in my memory,
and twist the facts to hold them to the wall.
And when I need some company,
I led them ride on the back of a melody,
but you say you've never wrote a song.
It feels strange, this kind of pain,
but I can't go fishin if it doesn't rain,
so fill me up and soak me to the skin.
We can never go back to way back when
when we couldn't wait for what could've been
At least I get to fall in love again.
We counted all our bug bites
on a trip around the world,
but those are fireflies in the floodlight
and you're a different girl.
At night I'm trying to fall asleep,
and in the day I try to stay awake.
It's the trying part that's new,
do you remember when time flew?
The new moon rose, but who could know?
It's dark as a shadow and it's cold as snow.
Am I getting any better or a different kind of worse?
I watch that phone like a water pot,
thinking please boil over so the waiting stops,
but the waiting's just begun, or so says everyone.
It feels strange, this kind of pain,
but I can't go fishin if it doesn't rain,
so fill me up and soak me to the skin.
We can never go back to way back when
when we couldn't wait for what could've been
At least I get to fall in love again.
I hope I get to fall in love again.

Losing the Losing Blues
03:16
|

I think I might be losing my hair.
Were these wrinkles in my forehead always there?
It's like the older I get, the less I'm prepared.
I am definitely losing my hair.
I think I might be losing my cool.
I've been following a few too many rules,
I don't wanna get hurt, I don't wanna get sued.
I'm definitely losing my cool.
I'm losing, I got the losing blues,
but I'm losing these losing blues,
when you're losing, it's easy to forget,
you haven't lost it yet.
I think I might be losing my mind.
Am I one in the crowd or one of a kind?
I couldn't pay the ticket, so they doubled the fine.
Yeah, I'm definitely losing my mind.
I think I might be losing control.
Digging for the diamonds got me stuck in a hole.
Now the record label's telling me I need more soul.
Man, I'm definitely losing control.
I'm losing, I got the losing blues,
but I'm losing these losing blues,
when you're losing, it's easy to forget,
you haven't lost it yet.
I think I might be winning it back.
I'm losing these losing blues.
I ain't always gonna win,
but I can definitely choose how I loose.
I'm losing these losing blues,
yeah I'm losing these losing blues,
when you're losing, it's easy to forget,
you haven't lost it yet.

Organ Donor
02:12
|

If I crash my motorcycle, and bust open my head,
they'll take my pulse and vitals, and then they'll pronounce me dead.
They'll open up my wallet, and they'll find my ID.
With a little pink dot in the corner that says they can take all my organs from me.
Well I'll be dead and gone, so I'm happy to share,
but before you cut me open, I want you to be prepared...
Cuz my blood's been boiled and my hearts been broke
and my lungs have choked on some funny smoke,
one time, I even had my stomach pumped.
My skin's been burned and bruised and bit,
and my intestine's seen a lot of shit,
and you can bet my liver might just get you drunk
If you want em you can have em, but just know where they've been,
In fact, I think they'd love to live in someone else's skin
who loves better with this heart,
and sings better with these lungs,
but remember, go ahead and have some fun.
Cuz my eyes have seen some crazy shit,
but they'd love to see some more of it,
and my kidneys really love the taste of beer.
And if they really do take everything,
there's a special organ in between
my legs that wouldn't mind some extra years.
If you want em you can have em, but just know where they've been,
In fact, I think they'd love to live in someone else's skin
who loves better with this heart,
and sings better with these lungs,
but remember, go ahead and have some fun.

If the full moon shows her face tonight
and the stars break through the haze,
meet me by the water,
where the river meets the bay,
where the lightning strikes so far away
that the thunder never comes,
where your face reflects the fire
and the moon reflects the sun.
If this match can light the tinder,
and the tinder lights the log,
could we lie there by the fire,
where the smoke blends with the fog?
And if our fingers touch below the sand,
could we laugh and let them stay,
and let the fire fill the silence
with the things that we don't say?
It don't matter what we call it,
it just matters that it's there,
I've got one more night to hold you tight,
and two more flights of stairs
Down in LA
the only stars are on the sidewalk,
beneath the souls and soles of shoes
that are always running late.
Here in Half Moon Bay
I hold the only one that I've got,
and wonder how this ocean
doesn't spill right into space.
You point to the Big Dipper,
and I point to Orion,
those stars are spread by lightyears
but they still make perfect shapes,
for two pale white kids on a pale blue dot
in a big ass Milky Way,
yeah I guess four hundred miles
really ain't that far away.
It don't matter what we call it,
it just matters that it's there,
I've got one more night to hold you tight,
and two more flights of stairs.

Habla mas despacio por favor
porque mi espanol no esta bien.
Perdon mi accento, pero tengo mas tiemp
y quiero conocer alguien.

Too Much

She said, “You've had too much.”
I said, “Yeah, you're probably right, but it's barely enough.”
From Monday blues to Sunday shoes, this all just feels the same.
Tomorrow always stays a day away.
Have I gone too far to stop?
Or have I seen too much to go on?
If I go straight enough for long enough,
I'll wind up at the start.
Sometimes long enough is so damn long.
And I'm willing to change,
sing out of my range,
but where's the wide-eyed whistler gone?
I don't know.
Is the voice inside my head
the voice with which I speak?
Stacking silver circles, waiting for the check,
getting caught in my own safety net.
Have I almost got it down?
Or have I had it up to here?
Do people grow like pupils adjusting to the dark,
or do they just grow rusty from the tears?
And I'm willing to change,
sing out of my range,
but where's the wide-eyed whistler gone?
And I'm willing to change,
sing out of my range,
but where's the wide-eyed whistler gone?

I don't want a girlfriend, but I need a girlfriend tonight.
I'd tell her, “Hey girl, let's go travel the world!”
but I still can't afford the flight.
I've got a '95 Camry, a few bottled waters,
a guitar, and a head full of songs.
We could just drive it South 'til the wheels come off,
or the check engine light comes on.
I hear the water's warm in Nicaragua,
And the girls are dark and curvy in Brazil,
but I'll probably just end up in Jalama,
in a cabin made of driftwood in the hills.
Singing along with Guy, and with John, Todd, Kris, and Jerry Jeff,
One needle dancing around eighty-five, and the other one sitting on 'F'
101 South, hand riding the wind, I say, “This is the meaning of free!”
Then one needle dies on the zero, with the other one sitting on 'E'
I hear the water's warm in Nicaragua,
And the girls are dark and curvy in Brazil,
but I'll probably just end up in Jalama,
in a cabin made of driftwood in the hills.
When we played pretend,
it was so open-ended and fun.
We'd build rocket ships from refrigerator boxes,
and race them away from the sun.
Now I'm back in a box, it's not made of cardboard,
but it will be when I'm on the streets
playing this here guitar by an old sharpie sign
that says “Will Play For Something To Eat”
I hear the water's warm in Nicaragua,
And the girls are dark and curvy in Brazil,
but I'll probably just end up in Jalama,
in a cabin made of driftwood in the hills.
