Nuke the Moon
03:42
|
|||
Kim Jong Un just nuked the Moon for a leg up in the arms race
His speech was proud while the mushroom cloud went spilling into space
He said, "Now everyone will know and fear the strength of North Korea!"
And a rain came down as his people bowed to their triumphant leader
The United Nations had lost their patience and met that afternoon
They hotly told Kim, "What the fuck? You can't just nuke the Moon!"
He said, "The US has been testing nukes from the desert to the sea.
All I did was nuke the Moon, so why you mad at me?"
Donald Trump got roarin drunk and was meeting with his cabinet
He said, "That Moon is ours, it's been ours ever since we stuck the flag in it.
This right here's an act of war, so send out the platoons.
I'm the king of the U.S.A., nobody nukes my Moon!"
So people stared while the airwaves blared, "Attack on our home soil!"
Scripts written by the monoliths of banks and guns and oil
Soon everybody wanted war, and the drones and missiles flew
Straight towards North Korea, and the man who nuked the Moon
Well if you've seen a bar room brawl, you know what happens next
Big man hits big talker, and each of them's got friends
Kim jong un's still reeling after Donald's upper cut
When Xi Jin Ping steps between and says, "Whoa guys, break it up!"
But Trump just swings his tiny fist and catches Xi Ping in the nose
So Putin dawns brass knuckles and he says, "Come at me, bro."
al-Baghdadi breaks a bottle and he rams it up Trump's ass
He yelps for help but NATO says, "You didn't have our back."
Then May attempts to stop the beating, because Trump is bleeding desperate
But Merkel's pissed about the Brexit, and strangles her with her own necklace
Putin's poised for the knockout punch when Trump sends the bombs to blastin
One atom splits, sets off an atomic chain reaction
I watch this madness from the trenches, and I know I'll be dead soon
Everyone nuked everyone cuz someone nuked the Moon
And now that Moon is looking down while the Earth below it burns
I hear it sigh and ask the Sun, "Will people ever learn?"
And now that Moon is looking down while the Earth below it burns
I hear it sigh and ask the Sun, "Will people ever learn?"

Jojo's Lament
04:56
|
|||
I heard what you said to Rosie
on the way to Gili Island
As I sat there sweating zipped inside my case
You said you shouldn't have brought me along
As if somehow I'd done you wrong,
then complained about my figure and my weight
After all the pubs and clubs we played,
the beach bonfire serenades,
did you really think that I would let you down?
That's when I decided
once we landed on that island
that I'd flirt with every musician in town.
You pulled me out that afternoon,
got all of my strings in tune,
then carried me with your hand around my neck.
And I flashed my mahogony,
and ebony, so all could see,
me teaching you a lesson in respect.
A fisherman named Alan
asked if he could play a song,
then ran his fingers up and down my frets.
As he cooed in soothing Japanese,
some tourists threw a few rupees,
and you stood there swaying by his fishing nets.
Then a man behind the curry cart,
stared at all my curvy parts,
you told him he could take me for a spin.
He served you all Nasi Goreng,
then sang a little Kurt Kobain,
while you and Rosie sang along with him.
I've been with you to Nicaragua,
Australia, Sumbawa,
El Salvador, Chile and Mexico
I've been through Yosemite,
Zion, Bryce, and Death Valley,
and everywhere on California's coast.
I've seen you make love, seen you crying,
heard your laughing and your sighing,
I've seen you at your best and at your worst.
That's all there is to it,
our path is paved with music,
the healing force of this whole universe!
Then came Markus, that Norwegian bloke,
who you met on the snorkeling boat,
who played everything from metal to bepop.
With tattoos on his neck and hands,
he played one from his Doom Metal band,
that's when I finally let my G-string pop.
You shoulda seen the look on your face,
you had no extras in your case,
but along came Alan and he told us "Wait right here."
He ran back with a brand new 3,
you strung me up and strummed a G
and we all sang for hours drinking beer
On the walk back, just before sunrise,
I caught a nocturnal local's eye
he ran up and said "Please let me sing for you."
He put out his cig and cleared his throat,
and sung in smoky, creaking notes
the most heartfelt ballad I ever listened to
Rosie asked the man his name,
and from behind his lighter's flame,
he said "All of my friends call me BT"
You asked him what that stood for
and with a Jack-O-Lantern smile
he blew out his smoke and told us "Broken Teeth"
I've been with you to Nicaragua,
Australia, Sumbawa,
El Salvador, Chile and Mexico
I've been through Yosemite,
Zion, Bryce, and Death Valley,
and everywhere on California's coast.
I've seen you make love, seen you crying,
heard your laughing and your sighing,
I've seen you at your best and at your worst.
That's all there is to it,
our path is paved with music,
the healing force of this whole universe!

Bioluminescence
06:14
|
|||
I crane my neck to watch the coastline
As it fades to different shades of blue
California, I'll be back in no time
Leavin what I know for what I know I gotta do
City streets and jungle streams I travel
Searchin for the next line in a song
I was so wound up but something came unravelled
By something in the way you came along
Every moment had momentum
And every sentence was a song
When we were bodysurfing naked in bioluminescence
seemed like every bit of sky was demanding our attention
we were beaming, beaming
Leaping from the cliffs to the waves of Uluwatu
I was jealous of the water, the way that it could touch you
so completely, completely
And if my life flashed before my eyes, I know I could laugh and sigh
Ahhhhhhhhh
I think with our combined Bahasa
we could motor scooter through these foriegn isles
Tre makasi, sama sama,
and the things we say with hand gestures and smiles
Volcanic hot springs, pruny fingers
You trace the lifeline on my hand
I tell you old regrets that linger
You said I was just becoming who I am
And every moment had momentum
Every sentence was a song
Bodysurfing naked in bioluminescence
seemed like every bit of sky was demanding our attention
we were beaming, beaming
Leaping from the cliffs to the waves of Uluwatu
I was jealous of the water, the way that it could touch you
so completely, completely
And if my life flashed before my eyes, I know I could laugh and sigh
Ahhhhhhhhh

I've got a neigbor, a really cool neighbor
We ripped out the fence and planted some tomatoes
Orange habaneros and green jalapenos
Red bell peppers zucchinis and carrots
I build houses and he builds pools
We borrow eachother's power tools
I bring all of our kids to school
And he brings all of em back
His wife coaches soccer for our little girls' team
My wife made the banner, "The Green Machine."
They dribble and they pass and they shoot and they scream
And they run in for half time snacks
I've got a neighbor (I've got a neighbor)
A really cool neighbor (really cool neighbor)
I've got a neighbor, and he's got a neighbor in me (he's got a neighbor in me)
I've got a neighbor (tengo un vecino)
A really cool neighbor (un vecino muy chido)
I've got a neighbor, and we're like family
We're deckin the halls with boughs of holly
We bring them cookies, they bring us tamales
Put some peppers from the garden in some fresh guacomole
And sing feliz navidad
They're teachin my daughter espanol
You should hear those little r's roll
she says, "Quiero ir a Mexico."
And I'm the proudest Dad
I've got a neighbor (I've got a neighbor)
A really cool neighbor (really cool neighbor)
I've got a neighbor, and he's got a neighbor in me (he's got a neighbor in me)
I've got a neighbor (tengo un vecino)
A really cool neighbor (un vecino muy chido)
I've got a neighbor, and we're like family
They'd been here for fifteen years
then one weekend they disappeared
I got a fuzzy phone call from Tijuana
He said, "They're calling me an alien.
They said I'm not American.
I'm callin just to tell you where I've gone to."
I don't know who's job he took
but I can tell you what they took
they took my friend, a man who gave his all
I know Jose's gonna be okay,
and we're gonna visit him some day,
Even if we have to climb that god damn wall
I've got a neighbor
A really cool neighbor
I've got a neighbor,
and they've got a neighbor in me
I've got a neighbor (tengo un vecino)
A really cool neighbor (un vecino muy chido)
I've got a neighbor, and we're like family
I've got a neigbor, a really cool neighbor
We ripped out the fence and planted some tomatoes
Orange habaneros and green jalapenos

Brightblack Sky
04:13
|
|||
Sippin from the moonlit pond
the midnight maddened vagabond
is perched upon the border of a dream
Slippin in it chills the skin
He breathes to let the memories in
Then sends them sailing softly with the stream
I seem to find low places
like the water finds the sea
I seem to find a way
to wind up lost
I wonder and I wander
Like the roots below the trees
Searching for a place to plant my cross
As thunder shook the sheets of rain
He shook his head and thought of ways
to make them think his death was just bad luck
Up the mountain, through the storm
His clothes were soaked, his throat was torn
from screaming skyward begging to be struck
I seem to find low places
like the water finds the sea
I seem to find a way
to wind up lost
I wonder and I wander
Like the roots below the trees
Searching for a place to plant my cross
He came to rest on ashy ground
And when the morning rose he found
the smoke-stained forest glazed in dazzling white
As if the stars had crystallized
Fell earthward from their brightblack sky
and burst like blizzard bombshells through the night
I will find my way back
like the winter finds the spring
I will find a way to take the loss
I can feel myself growin
Like the roots below the trees
Searching for a place to plant my cross
Searching for a place to plant my cross
Searching for a place to plant my cross

Baby, let's go to Sleep
03:09
|
|||
Baby, let's go to Sleep
I know a guy there
I've been there every night this week
The bouncer knows my name
Baby, we can skip the queue
He'll lift the red rope and find us a booth
There's plenty to dream
And a dance floor too
Baby let's go to sleep
Baby, let's go to Sleep
I got two front row tickets
I won't lie, they weren't cheap
But these guys are our favorite
Oo don't it take you back?
Remember how those crickets
in slow motion sound like angels?
Baby let's go to Sleep
I know it's been a while
And life can get so wired
like buzz saw neon thunderstorms
Now don't you feel tired?
Baby let's go to sleep
And let's stay there til noon
Breath out sweet and slowly
like honey comin off a spoon
Baby don't it take you back?
Remember how those crickets
in slow motion sound like angels?
Baby, let's go to sleep

God Knows Where
03:41
|
|||
I'm the funky folkadelic, devilish angelic
finding any trouble that I can
I'm the roadside livin, soul love givin
border of a boy and a man
I'm the puff puff passer
Anybody ask ya, what the hell I gotten up to
Tell em, I'm God knows where doin Lord knows what
with Jesus Christ knows who
I was trompin through the snowy high Sierras
where the alpine glow ignites Cathedral Peak
Aside from trees and coyotes and sparrows
I hadn't seen a single soul all week
When I saw an old man sittin on the granite
with a palette and a paintbrush in his hands
I scampered up the stones to see his canvas
and my jaw dropped at his portrait of the land
He caught the sunlight shattered on the river
and the shadowed emerald glow of lodgepole pines
His glittering ice-capped mountains made me shiver
As they pierced the clouds that hung in rosy skies
I smiled and I said, "Man, that's unbelievable.
No artist that I know can quite compare."
He said, "The hard part's pickin where to put the easle.
I just plagiarize the Earth and Sky from there."
I'm the funky folkadelic, devilish angelic
finding any trouble that I can
I'm the roadside livin, soul love givin
border of a boy and a man
I'm the puff puff passer
Anybody ask ya, what the hell I gotten up to
Tell em, I'm God knows where doin Lord knows what
with Jesus Christ knows who
No rope, no phone, no sense of any plannin
Just a feelin I should head back to the valley
That's how I got lost in Tenaya Canyon
A place where people go missin and things tend to go badly
I slipped and slid down slopes of frozen boulders
While the waterfall was roarin by my side
The forest ripped the pack off of my shoulders
Five miles later I swear I almost died
Perched on the edge of stupidity and bravery
Next to a slippery cliff of melted snow
I looked up to the sky and said, "Lord, save me!"
Then I looked down at the rapids far below
That rock I kicked fell shattering to pieces,
but the trees caught me and set me on the ground
And that ground I kissed as I said, "Thank you, Jesus,
I'm just here to spread your Love from here on out!"
I'm the funky folkadelic, devilish angelic
finding any trouble that I can
I'm the roadside livin, soul love givin
border of a boy and a man
I'm a sinner and a pastor
Anybody ask ya, what the hell I gotten up to
Tell em, I'm God knows where doin Lord knows what
with Jesus Christ knows who

Gypsy Dancin Floor
03:28
|
|||
You set the bats inside my heart cave all a'flutter
When you waltzed in with your torch
Cleared away the cobwebs and the clutter to reveal rosy quartz
You threw my belongings out the door
To make room for your gypsy dancing floor
Your gypsy dancing floor
It’s all barefoot stomps and cosmic twirling
Stay up late and wake up early,
I’m not worthy of someone like you
I’m too ugly broke and bony
Nerdy dirty stoned and lonely
Then you say you see it in me too
Then you say you see it in me too
I tell you, "Time’s a taloned bird of prey
that drags us towards its nest of endless night."
You smile like the dawn and say,
"Well, I guess we best enjoy the flight."
The voices in my head all quiet down
To listen to you whistling through town
It’s all hummingbirds and chickadees and
sweet rosella melodies
I’m not worthy of someone like you
I’m too ugly, broke and bony
Nerdy dirty stoned and lonely
Then you say you see it in me too
Then you say you see it in me too

Moonshadow, Morningfire
04:38
|
|||
Monday morning, Stagecoach over
Pool is full of booze and soda
There ain't no cure to country hangovers
Like gettin out on the road
Two best friends and a car named Kiki
Trunk is stuffed and the cooler's leaky
radio's broke but we got a CD:
Old Crow Medicine Show
Moonshadow, Morningfire
Give each other names in Navajo
Two angels standing out on Angel's Landing
Gas, schmas, Kiki's gonna last,
Let's get out on the road
Dirty jokes over wine we drink
Zion's blushin orange and pink
This canyon's grand, makes us think,
"How many ping pong balls could fit?"
Snack uncle, snack uncle
Pass the Tapatio
Mama mia, stuffed quesadillas
and gourmet chocolate
Moonshadow, Morningfire
Give each other names in Navajo
Two angels standing out on Angel's Landing
Gas, schmas, Kiki's gonna last,
Let's get out on the road
Runs-with-rashes, Runs-with-blisters
Brooke's just laughing taking pictures
I'm their brother, their my sisters
Since we were eight years old
We squeeze in caves and tiny tents
and calendars and camera lenses
round the fire, the thing with friends is
they keep you from the cold
Moonshadow, Morningfire
Give each other names in Navajo
Two angels standing out on Angel's Landing
Gas, schmas, Kiki's gonna last,
Let's get out on the road
We say hey to a hundred strangers
And pessimistic park rangers
that warn us bout a thousand dangers
but we're gonna be okay
Sagebrush meadow, lightning tree
Dehydrated buffalo wings
Berries from the bush,
water from the stream
What a wonderful day
Moonshadow, Morningfire
Give each other names in Navajo
Two angels standing out on Angel's Landing
Gas, schmas, Kiki's gonna last,
Let's get out on the road
Now I'm in Melbourne, she's in Austin,
and she's in Berkeley, but it's all awesome
Cuz roads like ours are always crossin
through this mountain range
Moonshadow, Morningfire
Give each other names in Navajo
Two angels standing out on Angel's Landing
Gas, schmas, Kiki's gonna last,
Let's get out on the road

Underneath the Overpass
03:55
|
|||
Underneath the overpass, the sergeant plays trombone
In a castle made of trash, that's what he calls home
Shopping carts and old umbrellas in a geodesic dome
Mmm-mmm home sweet home
Underneath the overpass, the sergeant combs his hair
Up above the cars roll past, they pay their tolls and fares
He says, "Come to my living room," and he pulls out an old lawn chair
Mmm-mmm, "I got somethin to share."
He says, "I can't tell you nothin you won't find out on your own.
The years, they show you some things that the days could never know.
It takes a lot of livin in a place to make it home.
Mmm-mmm, so make it home."
Underneath the overpass, the sergeant throws a bone
to a dog that makes him laugh, he named him Al Capone
Coke bottle windchimes, and a beat up radio
Yeah, mmm-hmmm home sweet home
Underneath the overpass, the sergeant downs his drink
Crawls beneath his colored dome, pets his dog and thinks
He lies there while the raindrops slowly carry him to sleep
Mmm-mmm him to sleep

Roadside Memorial
05:04
|
|||
Roadside memorial, four unlit candles
bouquet of bruised roses and a soggy stuffed animal
Day of the service, the forecast was rain
We brought our umbrellas, but the tears never came
Once in a while, the Sun burns,
Once in a while, the Earth turns
There's ghosts in the city, the white plastic bags
The one-legged pigeon in the park by the flag
The man on the corner is shaking his can
But she turns towards the window with the porcelain mannequin
Once in a while, the Sun burns,
Once in a while, the Earth turns...
He stands on a bridge, and looks down at the river
His rippled reflection looks back towards the sky
The sun on the water, both lovely and blinding
He squints as he watches himself flowing by
Once in a while, the Sun burns,
Once in a while, the Earth turns...

G's and C's
05:51
|
|||
I play for the wall when my cat gets bored
I got too many words, and not enough chords
Just runnin my mouth pickin G's and C's again
I strum on my bed and mumble bout my feelings
For my only fan, spinnin on my ceilin
Just runnin my mouth pickin G's and C's again
"Do you have an alternate form of ID?"
says the airport security official suspiciously
I said, "Look man, I swear it's me."
Handed him a drivers license and a student ID
He said, "Well, you've certainly lost a lot of weight..."
Then he continued to elaborate
"Maybe you're just tired...definitely less tan...
Well, go on ahead."
"Gee, thanks man."
"Hello?" my mom says from the other end
"Hey, it's me, how you been?
"Who?"
"Ma, it's me, Tim."
"Jesus, sweetie, you been smokin again?"
G's and C's, C's and G's
Runnin my mouth pickin G's and C's again
I had a gig here last night with this here guitar
It's a seven kilometer walk home from the bar
3 ks in I look longingly at a taxi
When I was young I used to dream about being
in a kick ass band
Doin stage dives on the raised hands of all of my fans
These days, I don't think that my sister could catch me
When I die, I'm gonna meet my maker
He'll give me my wings, and give my harp
I'll head to the clouds and chill in the breeze
Start strummin those G's and C's
G's and C's, C's and G's
I'll be runnin my mouth for the rest of eternity
G's and C's, C's and G's
Runnin my mouth, pickin G's and C's again
